Each year, lakhs of candidates from across India are drawn to the Civil Services Examination (CSE). The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently held the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, a crucial stage in the selection of the nation’s top bureaucrats. Over 10 lakh individuals registered for this year’s exam, which was conducted at numerous centers nationwide.
The CSE is among the most competitive examinations in India, responsible for selecting officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other allied services. After three challenging stages, only a few hundred candidates secure a place on the final list.
This year, the preliminary exam took place on Sunday and comprised two papers: General Studies and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Each paper had a duration of two hours and was worth 200 marks. Although the CSAT paper is only qualifying in nature, candidates must pass it to move forward in the selection process.
Numerous candidates described the paper as having a moderate level of difficulty. Within hours of the exam, several coaching institutes released unofficial answer keys. Based on the feedback from aspirants, experts anticipate that the cut-off might be slightly higher than last year’s.
UPSC officials noted that the exam was conducted smoothly, with no significant technical issues or incidents of misconduct reported. While COVID-19 precautions were not mandatory this year, some candidates chose to wear masks.
Preparing for the CSE typically requires one to two years of dedicated effort. Aspirants generally depend on standard textbooks, mock tests, and coaching support. The fierce competition often drives many to study for 8–10 hours each day.
The second stage, the Mains exam, is set to take place in December. Only those candidates who pass the prelims will qualify to sit for the Mains. This stage consists of nine descriptive papers that assess knowledge, writing skills, and analytical thinking.
Candidates who pass the Mains advance to the interview round. This final stage evaluates personality, communication skills, and suitability for public service roles. The entire selection process spans nearly a year.
Achieving success in the CSE paves the way for high-ranking government positions. Officers hold critical roles in policy-making, law enforcement, and governance. To many aspirants, it represents not just a career, but an opportunity to serve the nation.
Parents and coaching centers play a significant role in the preparation journey. Cities such as Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have emerged as major coaching hubs, providing specialized guidance for each phase of the exam.
Experts advise candidates to maintain focus and manage stress effectively. “Success isn’t solely about intelligence; patience and consistency are crucial,” remarked a retired IAS officer.
UPSC is expected to publish the preliminary exam results within two months. In the meantime, candidates have already begun preparing for the next stage. Despite the lengthy process, the aspiration to become a civil servant motivates many to persevere. The Civil Services Examination continues to stand as a symbol of ambition, resilience, and public service in India.
