‘Take it off!’: Kim K’s Dolce & Gabbana X SKIMS campaign comes under fire for pairing lingerie with the holy rosary

Kim Kardashian is undoubtedly a fashion icon, yet recently, some of her major accessory choices have been attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Kim Kardashian’s public persona is anything but casual; every aspect is meticulously curated, as is typical for celebrities of her exclusive status. Nevertheless, Kim rarely misses the mark. Her latest SKIMS capsule collection for Italian luxury house Dolce & Gabbana, inspired by Sophia Loren, is a prime example. This line blends classic vintage Italian aesthetics with SKIMS’ signature blend of sensual and functional shapewear, earning rave reviews. The initial surge in demand even caused the website to crash, and with most of the limited edition items now sold out, it’s safe to call the collaboration a success. However, it wouldn’t be complete without a touch of controversy. The latest series of campaign photos shared by Kim seems to have stirred just that—whether intentionally or not.

Intended as a promotional post for the remaining D&G X SKIMS pieces, Kim’s carousel featured her in a pristine white, lace-trimmed lingerie set. Her sleek, straight hair and matte nude makeup were complemented by a single accessory—a rosary necklace around her neck. This choice sparked criticism from many who felt the pairing was inappropriate, overshadowing the praise the collection had otherwise received. Disapproving comments included: “Please don’t play with the Holy Rosary,” “Wearing a cross while being half-naked. Would you mock other religions too?” “Have you researched the rosary before taking a half-nude picture with it? That’s beyond shameful!” “A rosary is not a necklace,” and “She wouldn’t walk into church like that. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Take off the rosary 📿 and have some respect!”

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Kim has faced criticism for her use of religious iconography in fashion. Earlier this month, she attended the LACMA Film + Art Gala 2024 wearing an all-white Gucci ensemble. While the outfit’s form-fitting silhouette and plunging neckline were noteworthy, it was her choice of accessory—a statement cross necklace—that drew attention. Specifically, it was the amethyst Attallah cross necklace, famously worn by Princess Diana. Kim had purchased the heirloom at a Sotheby’s London auction in 2023 for nearly $300,000. However, her decision to pair it with such a daring outfit did not sit well with many. Criticisms included: “Read the room and please take the necklace off,” “As a Brit, I’m disgusted that you’ve worn our princess’s necklace in such a vulgar way…classless,” and “Abominating the Cross ✝️.”

Fashion is subjective, as are personal opinions. Do you believe Kim has crossed a line?
