Netflix’s newly released film ‘Mary’ has drawn significant criticism from both Palestinian supporters and conservative Christians. Directed by D.J. Caruso, ‘Mary’ focuses on the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

The filmmakers are facing an online backlash due to their decision to cast Israeli actress Noa Cohen as Mary and the overall lack of Arab and Palestinian representation in the movie. Critics claim that choosing an Israeli actress for such a significant biblical role, especially amid heightened Middle Eastern tensions, is politically insensitive.

The film features Israeli actors Noa Cohen, Ori Pfeffer, and Ido Tako. Cohen’s portrayal of Mary has been particularly criticized for “erasing Palestinian identity and perpetuating historical inaccuracies about the family of Christ.”

Several Christian groups have criticized the film for straying from traditional religious teachings, particularly objecting to its portrayal of Mary’s relationship with Joseph and questioning its historical accuracy.

The filmmakers have defended their choice to cast Israeli actresses, emphasizing that it was intended to maintain authenticity given the cast’s Israeli origins.

D.J. Caruso was quoted by The Telegraph, saying, “It was important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel to ensure authenticity.”

Director Caruso is recognized for his work on thrillers such as ‘Disturbia’ and ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’.

Noa Cohen was also involved in a controversy

This isn’t the first time Noa Cohen has been at the center of controversy, igniting debate. For example, her portrayals of Archangel Gabriel and Satan in modern attire have polarized audiences.

A social media user expressed, “It’s profoundly offensive to cast an Israeli actor as Mary while Israel is accused of committing genocide against Palestinians and destroying ancient Christian communities and heritage sites.”

Another user pointed out, “It’s clear the scriptwriters, producers, and directors of the movie ‘Mary’ didn’t consult the Bible before releasing it on Netflix.”

A third user commented, “Jesus, Mary, and all characters in this show should be Palestinian.”

“The main cast is predominantly white Europeans, with only one biracial actor,” noted another user.
