The municipality claims that “more than 30,000 euros is spent every year on cleaning paan spit” and that even using professional cleaning equipment hasn’t been completely successful in getting rid of the stains.
As part of a continuous effort to combat the problem of paan spitting in public areas, two males of Indian descent were fined more than 1,000 euros each in the London borough of Brent. According to the Times of India, the action is part of ongoing enforcement efforts by local officials to stop the practice.
Earlier this month, the North West London Magistrates’ Court fined Edgware resident Akshitkumar Bhadre Patel (31) 1,391 euros. He did not show up for the hearing, therefore the court procedures were conducted without him. He was found guilty of spitting paan on a Kingsbury road on June 11, 2025.
“The initial fine was 100 euros, but after it remained unpaid and the matter was taken to court, it rose to 1,391 euros,” according to officials quoted by TOI.
In a different but related instance, the same court fined Ruislip resident Hitesh Patel, 32, 1,391 euros. In his case, he was found guilty of spitting paan on a Wembley Hill road on June 12, 2025. He did not show up for the hearing, just like in the previous case.
The financial cost of such instances has been emphasized by the authorities.
“The initial fine was 100 euros, but after it remained unpaid and the matter was taken to court, it rose to 1,391 euros,” officials cited by TOI said.
