“Oxytocin, released during orgasm, positively impacts emotional health and strengthens relationship bonds,” she explains. “When sexual activity decreases, couples may experience distance and conflicts because the hormones that help solidify relationships are no longer being produced, leading to stress and mental exhaustion.”
2. Your Immune System May Weaken
Believe it or not, abstaining from sex can affect your body’s immunity levels. Research from Wilkes-Barre University in Pennsylvania, along with insights from Dr. Anand, indicates that sexual activity triggers a surge of immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that helps fight off viruses.
“When you stop having sex, the release of immunoglobulin A drops significantly, making you more susceptible to illnesses like the flu, coughs, and seasonal fevers,” she explains.

The sense of being desired, which sex often provides, disappears and can lead to a negative self-image. In contrast, healthy physical intimacy boosts confidence and enhances well-being,” says Dr. Anand.
She further explains, “On a personal level, the endorphins released during sex, along with the dopamine activation in the brain’s reward circuit, are known to elevate mood, almost like hitting a reset button.”
4. Not having sex can also change your sexual response
Steering clear of sexual activity for a long time can lead to a drop in libido, affecting both men and women. Various factors, including psychological and physical health, can influence this decrease in sexual desire. Additionally, the reduced libido can create a negative cycle; the longer the absence of sex, the harder it becomes to recover the original level of desire.
