From Dubai to Kuwait and Bahrain: Who Iran Has Targeted — and Who It Has Spared — Explained Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates have all been affected, upending the tranquility these nations had previously experienced, shielding them from their unstable environments and making them popular travel destinations for foreigners.
US, Israel-Iran war news: On Monday, March 2, missiles kept flying over West Asia as the US and Israel bombarded Iran, which reacted by targeting US military installations scattered throughout the area.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates have all been affected, upending the tranquility these nations had previously experienced, shielding them from their unstable environments and making them popular travel destinations for foreigners.
Iran’s verified objectives
Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates have all been targets of Iranian strikes. Debris and injuries in several areas have been linked to interceptors stopping the attacks rather than the attacks themselves. Among the big hits are:
US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters, Bahrain: According to the AP, one person was killed by shrapnel from an intercepted missile, according to the island nation of Bahrain. Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, claimed to have intercepted 34 attack drones and 61 missiles.
The Pacific and Atlantic Fleets send ships here on a rotating basis. The Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Red Sea, and the Arabian Sea are all included in the fleet’s roughly 2.5 million square mile area of responsibility. It contains crucial choke points at the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz.
Aramco refinery, Saudi Arabia: Following an attack by Iranian drones, the world’s largest state oil corporation, Aramco, temporarily closed its significant Ras Tanura oil refinery in Dammam on the Persian Gulf. The fire at the refinery, which can produce more than 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day, did not result in any fatalities, according to Saudi official media.
Three US fighter jets were unintentionally shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses in a “friendly fire incident,” according to CNN, which cited the US military.
Al Jazeera also quoted the Kuwaiti Defense Ministry, which claimed that multiple ballistic missiles attacked the Ali al-Salem Air Base but were all intercepted. On Sunday, one death was reported.
In Kuwait, at least three US military personnel have also perished.
Qatar’s Defense Ministry reported that two drones had attacked Ras Laffan’s energy facilities. Following the strikes, the state-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy stopped producing LNG, according to Bloomberg. Interestingly, half of India’s total imports from Qatar in 2024 came from LNG.
Explosions were reported at the opulent Palm Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab, and Dubai airport. The hotel caught fire due to drone debris, according to the AFP. In the UAE, three people were reported deceased.
In contrast to previous confrontations, President Masoud Pezeshkian’s description of Khamenei’s death as “a great crime” implies that Iran is under intense pressure.
In a letter to the UN, Abbas Araghchi promised to use “all necessary defensive capabilities and measures” to thwart the assaults by the US and Israel. As a result, any opposing forces’ bases, facilities, and assets in the area are regarded as valid military objectives. He stated, “Until the aggression is totally and unequivocally stopped, Iran will exercise this inherent right decisively.”
“We are not attacking our neighbors in the Persian Gulf countries, we are targeting the presence of the US in these countries,” he added to Al Jazeera. The decision-makers in this battle should be the target of neighbors’ complaints.
Notably, Oman, which had been mediating negotiations between the United States and Iran thus far, declared on Sunday that two drones had attacked the Duqm commercial port, injuring one employee. There have also apparently been hits to oil tankers. Iran has always used Oman as a conduit to the West.
Experts also think that Iran is attempting to put enough pressure on these nations to convince the US to set up a truce.
Although Turkey is home to a significant US military air base, NATO may intervene if Turkey is directly attacked.
