According to a PTI report, Ajit Agarkar, the top selector for the Indian cricket team, has not asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his term till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar “doesn’t need to seek an extension,” according to a BCCI official who categorically denied allegations that he had a conversation with the board.” India has won the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026 after Agarkar became chairman of the BCCI’s selection committee in 2023. A senior BCCI official with knowledge of the situation told PTI, “The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI, and the selectors’ contract runs until September this year.”

“After Ajit’s contract expires in September, the BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether to keep playing until the ODI World Cup the following year. According to the constitution, a senior selector may serve for a maximum of four years without requesting an extension, he continued.

A top BCCI source told PTI on Friday that although the ODI World Cup is still a year away, India’s 20 or so prospects have already been identified, and the five national selectors will monitor these players during the IPL beginning on March 28.

SS Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Pragyan Ojha make up the panel headed by Ajit Agarakar. Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa will co-host the World Cup in October and November of 2027.

The panelists are required to watch the other games on TV while attending games at their separate bases. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the reigning champions, will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru to kick off the IPL.

Das lives in Kolkata, whereas Agarkar is located in Mumbai. Ojha is anticipated to watch his portion of the IPL matches in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, while RP Singh and Ratra live in the National Capital Region. Each selector is required by the BCCI to witness at least one game each week, which equates to five games from the venue each week. If not, they can track on television,” the official stated.

It is thought that this IPL would focus more on monitoring the performance of the around twenty players who will be competing in the 50-over World Cup due to the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympics that year.

No breakout IPL player is anticipated to be considered by the selection for the ODI World Cup.

During this year’s IPL, the performance and fitness of the key 50-over specialists will be monitored.

The four other fast bowlers for ODIs will be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. It has been reliably learned that pacer Harshit Rana will need a significant amount of time to recover.
