Azerbaijan Airlines Plane Requested Emergency Landing Before Crashing

The aircraft had 67 passengers on board, and some of them survived.

The Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft that crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday had reportedly requested an emergency landing prior to the incident. The flight was carrying a total of 67 individuals, including five crew members. It was originally en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya but was redirected due to foggy conditions in Grozny.

“A plane operating on the Baku-Grozny route crashed near Aktau,” stated the Kazakh transport ministry. “It is operated by Azerbaijan Airlines.”

The aircraft, an Embraer 190, initially attempted an emergency landing approximately three kilometers from Aktau, an important oil and gas center on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea.

Social media videos captured the plane rapidly descending and bursting into flames upon impact.

The number of fatalities remains uncertain, but initial reports indicate that 14 people have been rescued. Several images also depicted ambulances at the crash site, where survivors were being assisted off the aircraft through the emergency exit at the rear.

The country’s emergencies ministry reported that the fire has been extinguished by the fire services, and the survivors are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

“Currently, 14 survivors have been transported to the regional hospital, with five of them in intensive care,” stated the health ministry’s regional department, as reported by AFP.
