Are Indian Muslims Patriotic?

A crowd of people in white attire gathered together, with one individual prominently holding the Indian flag featuring orange, white, and green colors, alongside a blue wheel.

The Indian Muslim community is the sole community in India that had the option to choose between Pakistan and India. The vast majority, numbering in crores, chose to remain in India. Is there any greater testament to their patriotism than this choice?

Many believe that Muslims lack patriotism, and some attempt to portray all Indian Muslims as traitors. Let’s take a closer look at this serious allegation.

Patriotic Muslims

Indian Muslims have clear evidence of their patriotism. They are the only community in India that can demonstrably claim their loyalty. How, you ask? They were the only community given the choice between Pakistan and India, and the overwhelming majority—crores of Muslims—chose to remain in India. Is there any greater proof of patriotism than this decision?

Muslims and Patriotism

Many believe that Muslims lack patriotism or loyalty to their country, but these stereotypes stem from ignorance, prejudice, and negative media portrayals. Like followers of other religions, Muslims possess a strong sense of patriotism for their country.

Muslim Contributions to India’s Independence

Many Muslims played a vital role and made great sacrifices during our nation’s Independence Movement.

Did you know?

  • Yusuf Meherally, a Muslim, coined the pivotal slogans “Quit India” and “Simon, Go Back,” which were central to the Freedom Movement.
  • The slogan “Jai Hind,” famously used by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, was created by Zain-ul Abideen Hasan, a Muslim who also served as a commander in the Indian National Army founded by Bose.
  • The powerful slogan “Inquilab Zindabad,” which inspired Shaheed Bhagat Singh, was introduced by Maulana Hasrat Mohani, a Muslim.
  • The iconic song “Sare Jahan se Acha, Hindustan Hamara,” embraced by many during the Freedom Movement, was penned by the Muslim poet Muhammad Iqbal.

Even today, this patriotic song is performed by the Indian Army and Navy bands during their Beating Retreat ceremonies.

Muslim Contributors to India’s Freedom Movement

The number of Muslims who contributed to India’s Freedom Movement is so extensive that it merits an entire book. In fact, Santimoy Roy authored a book on this very subject titled “Freedom Movement and Indian Muslims,” published by the National Book Trust in Delhi.

Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs List – what does it tell us?

One of the most tragic and unforgettable events in the history of India’s Independence is the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Those who question the contributions of Muslims to the Freedom Movement should examine the list of martyrs from that incident.

British officers in Punjab compiled a list of those killed and injured during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. This list was later rediscovered in four files from the Home Department of the British Government in Punjab. It contains names of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs alike.

Detailed record of claims submitted in the Akhira District, including recommendations and outcomes for various applicants.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre highlights how Hindus and Muslims stood united in their fight for the country’s freedom. That is true patriotism! This stands in stark contrast to those who wrote apology letters to the British.

Do Indian Muslims Favor Pakistan?

Some people believe that many Indian Muslims support Pakistan. There are ongoing attempts to associate Indian Muslims with Pakistan, suggesting that they have an affinity for Pakistan due to shared religious ties. Additionally, one often hears remarks such as “Go to Pakistan” being directed at them.

If Indian Muslims truly favored Pakistan, why would they choose to remain in India and contribute to the nation by paying taxes here?

While Indian Muslims and many in Pakistan share the Islamic faith, it is crucial to recognize that Muslims in India are Indian Muslims, and those in Pakistan are Pakistani Muslims.

Being of the same faith does not grant Indian Muslims any rights in Pakistan, such as voting or purchasing land. Moreover, a bomb from the Pakistani Air Force would not differentiate between Indian Muslims and others based on religion. Every sensible Indian Muslim understands this reality and consistently supports India.

Faith and Patriotism

Connecting faith with patriotism is a significant error. For instance, Nepal is the only Hindu country in the world, so one might assume it would be very friendly with India. However, the reality is quite different, as Nepal has often distanced itself from India. Consider these headlines:

  • “Nepal Snubs India, To Hold Joint Military Exercise With China”
  • “Nepal Snubs India, Adopts Constitution Amid Protests”
  • “Himalayan Snub for India as Nepal Signs Railway Deal with China”
  • “Nepal PM Snubs India, to Visit China First”

These headlines make it evident that Nepal tends to favor China over India. Why would a Hindu-majority nation like Nepal align more closely with a Communist country like China rather than India? This is a matter of politics and national interest, not religion. The same principle applies to the relationship between Indian Muslims and Pakistan. Faith is separate from national welfare.

Indian Muslims and Cricket

Many believe that Indian Muslims always support Pakistan in cricket, thereby questioning their patriotism. However, it is important to understand that a sport can never be a true measure of one’s patriotism. Players participate for their passion and financial gain, while fans enjoy the game for entertainment. What sets cricket apart in this context? Absolutely nothing.

Interestingly, only cricket seems to be used as a gauge for patriotism. Why not other sports? Consider Hindus who support Red Bull or McLaren Mercedes in F1 racing instead of Force India—should they be labeled unpatriotic?

For those who believe that anything related to Pakistan should be avoided, what about Hindu music enthusiasts who admire artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif Aslam? Are they considered unpatriotic as well? If Hindu fans of these Pakistani musicians aren’t seen as lacking patriotism, then why should sports be any different? Music, sports, and the arts transcend geographical boundaries and should never be used as measures of patriotism.

The notion questioning the patriotism of Indian Muslims based on such grounds is simply unfounded.

Pahalgam Terrorist Attack (Based on Religion) – Targeting and Killing Male Hindus:

There are incidents seen across India where we can see some local Indian Muslims supporting Terrorists for killing Hindus on 22nd April 2025. Five terrorists of the Resistance Front (TRF) attacked male Hindu tourists in Baisaran Valley, in the Indian-administered territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

A few links to those incidents:

  1. See how an Indian Muslim is openly supporting terrorists. When a journalist said that people were shot in Kashmir based on religion, a Muslim from Lucknow, UP, said, ‘We support that.’

2. Muslim Women Seen ‘Sympathizing’ With Pakistan Flags In Karnataka, Kalaburagi Video Triggers Anger

3. A 31-year-old man was arrested in #Jharkhand’s #Bokaro for allegedly posting controversial remarks supporting terrorist organizations following the recent #PahalgamTerroristAttack in #JammuAndKashmir.

4. A case has been registered in #Mangaluru, #Karnataka, against a Facebook user named ‘#NichchuMangaluru’ for allegedly justifying the 22 April terrorist attack in #Pahalgam, #JammuAndKashmir.

Some Counter Behaviour is also spotted in many parts of the country.

  1. A video has surfaced from #Sirauli village in #Ghaziabad, #UttarPradesh, showing #Muslims being forced to leave while trying to sell goods

A group of youths declared that no #Muslim would be allowed to enter the village to sell products.

2. In #UttarPradesh’s #Hathras, a #Muslim labourer at a site was asked to stop work in retaliation to the #PahalgamTerrorAttack.

3. Police have taken into custody #BajrangDal members who had stuck Pakistan flags at #JagatCircle in #Karnataka’s #Kalaburagi.

This is the time when we expect people from all religions to stand together against Pakistan and the Terrorism spread by them. Even if some Indian Muslims favor Pakistan in Cricket, however, in Terrorism, we all should take a common Stand against Pakistan.

These Communal differences are very common in a Big Country like India, where Muslims are the highest population Minority. We all, especially the leaders and the politicians should focus on the Unity and we should all stand against Pakistan.
