Homemade liquid pesticides can be made using everyday household ingredients such as soap, oil, garlic, and hot peppers. These mixtures help control pests by repelling, suffocating, or irritating them, offering a natural alternative to chemical-based solutions.
1. General-Purpose Insecticidal Soap Spray
An insecticidal soap spray is highly effective against soft-bodied pests such as aphids, mealybugs, mites, and thrips. It works by breaking down their protective outer coating, leading to dehydration and control.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon mild liquid dish soap or Castile soap (avoid products with bleach or strong degreasers)
- 1 gallon (about 3.78 liters) of water
Instructions:
Combine the soap and water in a spray bottle or garden sprayer.
Shake well before each use.
Spray thoroughly over the plant, especially the undersides of leaves where pests tend to hide.
Apply during early morning or late evening to avoid leaf damage from sunlight.

- 1 quart (about 0.94 liters) of water
Instructions:
Blend the garlic and peppers with a small amount of water until smooth.
Add the mixture to the remaining water and let it sit overnight to infuse.
Strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove solids and prevent clogging.
Stir in the liquid dish soap to help the solution stick to plant surfaces.
Pour into a spray bottle and apply as needed, preferably in the early morning or evening to avoid leaf damage.
3. Neem Oil Spray
Neem oil is a highly effective, broad-spectrum organic pesticide and fungicide. It disrupts insect life cycles and acts as an antifeedant, preventing pests from feeding on plants.
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons cold-pressed neem oil
- 1 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap
- 1 quart of water
Instructions:
Mix the neem oil and dish soap in a spray bottle; the soap helps the oil blend with water.
Add the water and shake well to ensure proper mixing.
Spray thoroughly over the entire plant, including the undersides of leaves.
Use regularly to treat existing infestations or as a preventive measure against pests.

- Spot Test: Before full application, test the spray on a small, hidden part of the plant. Wait 24 hours to check for any damage, such as leaf burn.
- Timing: Apply sprays in the early morning or late evening to prevent leaf scorching and avoid harming beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.
