Messaging apps need to constantly confirm that the SIM card used to create the account is still operational on the device. The application will stop functioning if the SIM-Binding Rules is taken out, changed, or disabled.
Delhi, New Delhi:
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated today that the government’s stance on SIM-binding regulations won’t alter since security concerns are more significant on the basis of national interest than arguments related to revenue consequences.
SIM-binding needs the original SIM to be physically placed on devices that use messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp. This would link accounts to particular SIMs, preventing cybercrime and digital fraud.
According to the Union Minister of Communications, the regulations governing the length of active online sessions will likewise remain unchanged. This implies that logging out is required for each web session that lasts longer than six hours.
However, mobile phones are exempt from the log-out regulations; they only apply to virtual connections.
Since the sessions would terminate every six hours, companion services like WhatsApp Web will still be impacted by the new SIM-binding regulations, which were announced by the Department of Telecom (DoT).
The messaging apps have to constantly confirm that the SIM card that was used to create the account is still operational on the device. Should the SIM be taken out, swapped out, or disabled, the application will no longer function.
Apps currently use one-time passwords (OTPs) to verify phone numbers.
Regarding Spectrum
According to Scindia, the DoT has received advice from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding the next spectrum auction’s preparation. He stated that the DoT is reviewing it and will provide its opinions shortly.
The DoT will make suggestions about reserve pricing and spectrum bands. According to the Union Minister, “recommendations would be evaluated and the specific timeline would be released at a later date.”
Scindia stated that he is “eager to start satellite services in India,” but that is contingent upon setting the spectrum assignment price and making sure all security requirements are met.
