10,000 kg of dates with use-by dates in 2022 and 2023 were confiscated by Uttar Pradesh food safety department officers in a startling discovery that reveals how some sellers are endangering public health in order to profit. The materials, which ought to have been disposed of long ago, were kept in a Kanpur godown, and authorities believe there was a scheme to include them in the supply chain when demand spiked during Ramadan and Holi.
Food safety agency representatives arrived at a Kanpur godown based on a tip. The godown is Rajnish Traders’ property. Officials noticed a pile of date packages as soon as they raised the shutter. Ten thousand kilograms, or 100 quintals, were the total amount. The stock is valued at approximately Rs 50 lakh based on the current market valuation.
After some research, it was discovered that these supplies had a 2022–2023 use-by date. These dates ought to have been thrown out a long time ago, but they were kept in the godown for a purpose that might have detrimental effects on public health.
Officials claim that traders were changing the labeling on these packs. Customers would be unaware that the dates they purchased are over three years old. Dates are surreptitiously pushed into the supply chain around Ramadan and Holi, when demand for them is at its highest. The people would suffer while the traders profited. Food poisoning and other health problems can result from consuming food products that are two to three years past their expiration date.
Nine or so samples were taken from the godown and forwarded for analysis by the food safety department. According to the officials, there is a significant risk to public health in this situation. As soon as they receive the test report, they stated, a case will be filed under strict provisions against the individuals involved.
